NOTICE BOARD
Weds 16th May 2012 - Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) Conference at AFC Bournemouth organised by The Wessex Autistic Society    Tel: 01202 703590    Email: conference@twas.org.uk
Cost: £95.00. Advertised as providing professionals & parents with a clearer understanding of PDA, first identified over 20 years ago by Dr Elizabeth Newson as a separate syndrome at the University of Nottingham & increasingly recognised as part of Autism spectrum. PDA is characterised by avoiding demands made by others believed to be due to high anxiety levels when not in control, behaviour which can be extremely disruptive to classroom settings.

SPECIALIST SUPPORT
Caroline Martin, IWEPS’ Specialist Support Advisor, attended a Professional Development day with one of the world's leading autism experts, Professor GARY MESIBOV, Director of Division TEACCH at the University of North Carolina 1992-2010. The day included Behaviour Management and Structured Teaching & incorporating ways of bringing the TEAACH approach to mainstream classrooms to help students with organisation and understanding and in turn reduce many behaviour outbursts. Caroline is presenting a synopsis of the main ideas at our Professional Development Seminar 17th January.

Caroline has been working with many schools and parents and is delighted to have facilitated two students being granted a Statement of SEN last term who had been turned down previously. Also, through her work with a young man who left school with limited qualifications and whose future looked bleak, he now has a chance of being able to look forward to his future through further education or an apprenticeship.

Don’t forget Statement funding can be used flexibly and investment in training for support staff can reap huge benefits as well as financial economy long term by ensuring support is targeted appropriately and effective. Also, Caroline is available on both planned & emergency bases as expert ‘locum cover’ should a specialist TA be absent or you need support for a pupil while a Specialist TA is being recruited.

At the time of writing, Caroline has a few slots in February/March for Playground Games, Social Skills, Literacy, Numeracy, Concentration, Memory, & ‘Change Theory’ Booster Groups which bring great returns for very little outlay.
